850 sf second unit with detached 1,300 sf garage/artist's studio
Studio 101 Designs designed this 1 bedroom second living unit and garage to extend the function of a previous client's project. Situated on a Northern California vineyard property, the second unit was designed to take advantage of the site's expansive views and southern exposure. The simple shed roof of the building allows for easy collection of rainwater to be used for irrigation and its south-facing orientation provides for maximum output from the solar photovoltaic array. The second unit will be Net Zero Energy Certified - with the use of electrical appliances, water heater and heat pump, the house's PV system will be able to produce as much energy as the occupant's require. To increase the sense of space in the small structure, the open living/dining/kitchen area extends (via sliding glass doors) onto a screened-in porch overlooking the vineyard.
The garage serves as ancillary storage and production space for the property's vineyard functions and incorporates a secluded 252 sf artist's studio with a roof deck above. Both structures will include the use of natural day lighting and ventilation, no-VOC paint, FSC-Certified cedar siding and cabinetry, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and bamboo flooring.
