2,576 sf house with 566 sf garage

Scott Landry and James Kean served as project managers for this 3 bedroom, 3 story house for the Museum of Science and Industry's Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit in Chicago while at Michelle Kaufmann Designs. The Smart Home is an open, spacious, loft-like multi-level home designed to offer healthy, clean and green living on an urban lot. This exhibit house is located on the MSI grounds, and has been toured by hundreds of thousands of museum visitors. It showcases many energy-smart design features, including cross ventilation, natural daylighting, rainscreen siding technology, green roofs, solar and wind power, graywater irrigation system, rainwater catchment, smart home automation and energy monitoring system, as well as low-flow plumbing fixtures, no-VOC paint, FSC-certified ipé siding and cabinetry, and radiant in-floor heating throughout.

Both the house and garage were built in a nearby factory as 7 modules and assembled on site, while the decks, patios, green roofs, and water feature were site-built.
