2,363 sf house with detached 496 sf studio and carport
Scott Landry served as project lead for this 3 bedroom home with detached art studio while at Michelle Kaufmann Designs. The Santa Barbara house is based on a Kaufmann design with customizations including a two-story side wing. This residence is located in a neighborhood near the downtown area, and uses a palette of exterior materials that respond to the contextual building colors. The open front porch allows the owners to connect with street life and talk with neighbors as they walk by.
One of its custom energy-saving features is a system of aluminum operable louver trellises and sliding louver screens. Some of its other 'green' features include natural daylighting and cross-ventilation through the large indoor-outdoor living/dining area, sustainable and recycled materials throughout the house, and boulders in the landscaping salvaged from site excavation.
Prior to construction, the owners had their previous home on the site deconstructed for salvage. Photography by John Swain
