Scott Landry and James Kean served as project managers for this 1-bedroom exhibit house West Coast Green Conference while at Michelle Kaufmann Designs. The home was open for a three day public viewing in the Civic Center Plaza adjacent to San Francisco's City Hall. Its design placed a premium on multifunctioning spaces and emphasized continuity between interior and exterior, making its modest square footage feel spacious. In addition, it showcased many energy-smart design features, including cross ventilation, natural daylighting, rainscreen siding technology, green roofs, solar power, graywater irrigation system, rainwater catchment, energy monitoring system, low-flow plumbing fixtures. This design exceeded the Green Point rating system by 300 percent.
The house was factory built in 8 weeks and assembled on site (with the help of many volunteers) within a week. Photography by John Swain
